Ireland at the weekend ordered the recall and destruction of all pork processed from September 1 after excessive levels of cancer-causing dioxin were discovered in pork raised on certain Irish livestock farms.

Dublin determined that contamination apparently originated from an industrial oil used in a machine which produced feed from recycled animal products at a specific plant in Ireland.

Irish authorities later found that the feed had also been sent to cattle farms and began tests on beef.

However, this raised less concern because not only do pigs and cows have different eating habits, but pigs are subject to intensive indoor or closed-area raising, while cows are allowed graze.

Although the levels of dioxin found in Irish pork were said to be as much as 100 times the accepted limit, experts pointed out that even at these levels vast.
